Moyo wa Afrika

“Heart of Africa”

I came across Moyo wa Afrika while I was in Tanzania and actually volunteering with another project. But the work that Karah and the team is doing here really made an impression on me and is making such a huge difference in the lives of these people, so I decided then and there that when I eventually came home I would find a way to support them.

So…here it is! I have partnered up with Moyo wa Afrika and we have a few exciting things in the pipeline, but as of right now, I have a gorgeous product that I think captures the ethos of this beautiful charity and $10AUD from each of these necklaces sold will go directly to Moyo wa Afrika.

A little about Moyo wa Afrika

Moyo wa Afrika assists in the development of remote villages throughout Tanzania by increasing access to health and education services by linking people from remote villages to health and education services, improving the overall well-being of people in these villages and promoting sustainable development.

The full-time, ongoing program is the Moyo wa Afrika Girls’ Centre where they provide full room and board for girls from remote villages to access post-primary or post-secondary education programs for job readiness. The girls’ stay at the centre and either travel to/from nearby colleges or receive on-site training in business skills, hair styling, sewing, or other trades. Most girls they serve are in the Maasai tribe but that is not a requirement, they just happen to be the tribe most represented in Northern Tanzanian remote villages.

In addition they have conducted a number of short-term projects in Engaruka and other villages such as soap-making and agricultural trainings, health centre and school renovations/donations, building a playground, eye clinics and distribution of eye glasses, supporting women’s small business groups through grants, and more.

Moyo wa Afrika also provide emergency support for people with medical needs which can’t be met in the village hospitals. They have paid for numerous surgeries and specialist treatments for women, men and children from remote villages who were unable to pay for these services.
